Edison based fuse panels are used and are inherently dangerous: due to age, fused neutrals, asbestos lining, the ability to place a dime behind the fuses, bypassing them (tenants do this to prevent the fuse from blowing), loose old wires, flying splice connections that are unboxed, sitting in the attic and basement, rat damage from biting the old wires (to get the insulation into their nests, as it keeps them very warm on cold nights), abraded wires from roofing workers, old aluminum antennaes on top of the attic wires, burned connections inside light fixture boxes right up against the wooden lath and plaster, light bulb burns, crystallized wires, old nicked cuts, wires that are too small for the given loads, like space heaters, hair blow dryers, washers, car garages, kitchen appliances that were never designed for such small old wire, to name a few!
